A female TikTok content creator at the centre of the controversy surrounding the 2026 Oloolu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan has denied filming the revered Oloolu masquerade and dismissed widespread rumours that she died after the incident.
The content creator, identified as Wasilat, made the clarification during a telephone interview on Lagelu FM, insisting that she neither recorded the sacred masquerade nor experienced the fate widely circulated on social media.
According to her, she was outside her family’s shop in the Oremeji area when she recorded what she believed was a normal procession and later shared the video online. She said social media users urged her to delete the footage before traditional custodians approached her the following day.
Wasilat maintained that she never intentionally filmed the Oloolu masquerade, expressing disappointment that those present at the scene did not defend her against the allegations.
The controversy gained attention after videos surfaced online showing the TikToker undergoing traditiona cleansing rites at the Oloolu compound, sparking speculation that she had violated cultural traditions.

The spokesperson to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Adeola Oloko, explained that Wasilat did not record the Oloolu masquerade itself but mistakenly captured the Alawo Oloolu, a figure associated with the festival. He added that following complaints about her health, her family sought help from the traditional custodians, who performed the necessary rites.
Oloko also said he could not verify claims circulating online that the woman disguised herself as a man to secretly film the procession.
An Ibadan-based content creator, Ayo Adams, who visited the Oloolu compound, confirmed that Wasilat is alive and recovering after undergoing the traditional rites.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command said it had no official report of the incident, noting that no complaint was lodged at any police station.
The annual Oloolu Festival is one of Ibadan’s prominent traditional events, attracting worshippers, cultural enthusiasts and visitors from across Yorubaland to celebrate the community’s heritage through prayers, rituals and colourful processions.
