
The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Sunday Olawale for allegedly circulating a false video claiming that bandits invaded Are Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, the suspect was tracked and arrested by operatives of the Command’s Rapid Response Squad in the Ekute area of Ado Ekiti after the misleading content sparked public concern on social media.
The police confirmed that the viral video, which surfaced on June 12, 2026, falsely suggested a bandit invasion in the community. Authorities later verified that no such attack took place anywhere in Ekiti State.
During interrogation, Olawale reportedly confessed to sharing the video but was unable to provide a credible reason for his actions.

The statement further disclosed that the suspect is being investigated for cyberstalking and spreading false information capable of causing fear and disturbing public peace.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Michael Falade, warned residents against the spread of fake news, stressing that the command will not tolerate any act that could trigger panic or disrupt public order.
He urged members of the public to always verify information before sharing it on social media, especially content related to security and emergency situations.
The police assured residents that Ekiti remains peaceful and urged continued cooperation with security agencies in maintaining law and order.
