East-West Road Flooding: Two Die as Families Demand N1bn Compensation from FG, Contractor
Two people have reportedly lost their lives after flooding allegedly linked to the construction of the Ataobong Bypass section of the East-West Road project in Akwa Ibom State.
The affected families have subsequently approached the Eket High Court, demanding N1 billion in damages from the Federal Government, the construction company handling the project and other parties involved.
The families alleged that the road construction altered the natural flow of rainwater into residential areas, resulting in severe flooding, building collapses and loss of lives.
One of the victims, identified as Isaac Nkenyie, reportedly died after his house collapsed during a night rainfall. A child from a neighbouring family was also said to have died when their building collapsed.

The affected residents are seeking compensation for their damaged properties, loss of loved ones, businesses and other resources.
They are also asking the court to prevent any selective payment of compensation to affected property owners.
The defendants include the Minister of Works, David Umahi; Gitto Construczioni General Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the project; the Akwa Ibom State Government; and Iniama and Partners, the estate valuers involved in the compensation process.
The estate valuers said compensation payments had commenced but were later stopped, adding that they were unaware of why the payments were suspended.
The case has been adjourned until October 20, 2026, for hearing.
