
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an investigation into a resident of Ikot Akpan Afaha Village in Uyo Local Government Area, identified as Edet George, over alleged illegal possession of a firearm and intimidation of his family and community members.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, operatives of the command acted on credible intelligence to carry out a targeted operation at the suspect’s residence in the early hours of July 11, 2026.
During the search, officers recovered a single-barrel gun along with eight rounds of live cartridges concealed within the premises.
The police revealed that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and enhance public safety across the state.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly used the weapon to threaten and intimidate residents of the community.

Further claims by his wife, whose identity was withheld, allege that he frequently terrorised members of his own household, including herself and their children, using the firearm.
“The suspect often used the weapon to instill fear, not only within the community but also among his immediate family members,” the statement noted.
Authorities have taken custody of the recovered firearm and ammunition, while investigations continue to determine the source of the weapon, its legality, and whether it has been used in other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Azare, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling illegal arms possession and ensuring that individuals who endanger lives and property are brought to justice.
He emphasized that the police remain resolute in sustaining intelligence-driven operations aimed at maintaining law and order and safeguarding residents across Akwa Ibom State.
