Singer Tiwa Savage says producer Don Jazzy helped her make a tough transition from R&B to Afrobeats after she returned to Nigeria in 2012.
Savage, who began her career abroad as a backup vocalist for artists including George Michael and Mary J. Blige, moved back home and signed with Mavin Records. She told TVC in a recent interview that the switch was challenging at first.
“It was difficult for me to transition from R&B to street sounds,” she said. “But when I was at Mavin Records, Don Jazzy opened my mind to so many different things. He made me believe that talent was not limited, that I could do anything if I really focused on it.”

She added that the Mavin boss “took me out of that R&B bubble and introduced me to other sounds.”
Savage said she does not regret returning to Nigeria or changing genres. She credited the move, and Don Jazzy’s guidance, for her growth in the industry.
