Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has become a father after leaving the World Cup squad to be with his wife in London for the birth of their son.
The Belgian Football Association confirmed on Monday that Doku flew out before Sunday’s match against Iran after doctors said the birth was imminent. The couple welcomed a baby boy named Praise.
Team doctor Brahim Hacene said Doku had already been ruled out of the Iran game due to illness and had been receiving treatment for several days, making the trip safe.
“As he had already been receiving the appropriate medical treatment for several days, he was able to fly without any medical risk to be with his family during this very special moment,” Hacene said.

Doku is expected to rejoin the Red Devils in Seattle on Tuesday. The 24-year-old started Belgium’s opening draw against Egypt but has yet to make a major impact in the tournament.
His decision to prioritize the birth earlier sparked debate after a L’Equipe TV presenter criticized fathers being present at childbirth. The comments drew backlash online, forcing the channel to apologize and take the presenter off air.
Belgium have drawn both group games so far and can secure a place in the Round of 32 with a win over New Zealand on Friday.
