South Africa defender Ime Okon has explained why he chose to represent Bafana Bafana ahead of Nigeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Hannover centre-back, who was also eligible for the Super Eagles, said his connection with South Africa was the main reason for his decision. He stressed that the SA team has always been his preferred option.
Okon played the full 90 minutes in South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic on Thursday. The defender is currently with Bafana Bafana at the World Cup being hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Speaking in a video shared by Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Okon said his commitment to South Africa came from playing for the country at COSAFA level and scoring for the side.
“I don’t know what to say but at the end of the day, I know where my heart lies. I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored,” he said.

When asked if Nigeria had tried to persuade him to switch allegiance, Okon dismissed the claim. He said there had been no serious approach from the three-time African champions.
“Not really, South Africa is my home. That’s what I have to say,” he added.
Nigeria missed out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup, marking the second straight tournament the Super Eagles will not feature in.
The team also failed to qualify for the 2022 edition, extending a poor run for a country that made its World Cup debut in 1994.
