
Lionel Messi added four more entries to the record books as Argentina beat Austria 2-0 in their second Group H game at the 2026 World Cup.
The Argentina captain scored both goals in the win that sent the defending champions into the knockout stage. Guinness World Records confirmed the milestones in a post shortly after the match.
Messi now holds the record for most World Cup finals goals with 18, surpassing his own previous mark. He also became the player with the most appearances in the tournament, reaching 28 matches.

The 39-year-old set two more benchmarks in Seattle. He recorded 18 wins at the World Cup, more than any other player, and has now played 2,489 minutes in the competition, the highest total in history.
“We are witnessing history,” Guinness World Records wrote on X.
Argentina will wrap up Group H against Jordan in their final group fixture. With five goals in two games, Messi is leading the race for the Golden Boot and showing no signs of slowing down.
