Police in Delta State have arrested a farmer, identified simply as Benjamin, for allegedly beating a suspected thief to death in Okpara-Waterside Community, Ethiope East Local Government Area.
The victim, identified as Marvis, was accused of repeatedly stealing palm fruit, locally known as banga, from the suspect’s farm.
According to reports, the incident began on Tuesday after Benjamin and several accomplices allegedly took Marvis from his father’s residence to a building in the community, where he was severely assaulted.
Witnesses said the victim was briefly revived after losing consciousness and was given a bottle of Malta Guinness before the beating reportedly continued until he died.
The suspects allegedly dumped Marvis’ body at his father’s compound before fleeing the area. Benjamin later reported himself to the police and is currently in custody, while efforts are underway to arrest other members of the group.

The incident sparked tension in the community after friends of the deceased, believed to be cult members, reportedly launched a retaliatory attack. During the unrest, a man identified as Rawlings was allegedly shot dead after attempting to calm the group.
Both victims’ bodies have been recovered and deposited in a mortuary by the police.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the farmer had repeatedly complained about theft from his farm before allegedly setting a trap that led to Marvis’ capture.
The source added that the incident has divided residents and members of the local vigilante group, with some defending the farmer’s actions while others condemned the killing.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said he would verify the incident before making an official statement.
