A Nigerian national, Chika Ibe, has allegedly died after being tortured by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) during a police operation in Cape Town.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Parksig Villas Complex in Belleville, Cape Town. According to the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), Ibe, an indigene of Lokpaukwu in Abia State, was allegedly subjected to severe beating, torture, inhumane treatment and suffocation while in police custody.
NICASA President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, condemned the incident, describing the allegations as deeply disturbing. He said that if confirmed, the actions would amount to a serious violation of human rights and the rule of law.

Videos circulating on social media showed Nigerians living in South Africa protesting on the streets and demanding justice for the deceased.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, where repeated cases of xenophobic attacks and alleged abuse have been reported over the years.
Authorities are yet to issue an official response to the allegations surrounding Ibe’s death.
