A wave of anger has swept through Ugwuoba community in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State following the arrest of a woman accused of subjecting her young niece to severe abuse, including allegedly forcing her to consume human faeces.
The disturbing incident, which has gone viral on social media, sparked widespread outrage as residents particularly women in the community mobilised and publicly confronted the suspect.
In circulating videos, the woman was seen being escorted through the streets by angry locals chanting and condemning the alleged act.
According to sources within the community, the suspect had reportedly subjected the child to repeated abuse over time, with the latest allegation triggering immediate action from residents.
Police authorities in Enugu State have since taken the woman into custody. A source confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) has begun preliminary investigations and has interviewed members of the victim’s family, including her parents.

Despite the viral nature of the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, stated he had yet to receive official details at the time of reporting.
The case has drawn strong condemnation from child rights advocates and members of the public, many of whom are calling for swift justice and intervention from relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Gender Affairs and child protection agencies.
Legal experts note that if proven, the alleged act could amount to multiple criminal offences under Nigerian law, including child abuse, assault, and inhuman and degrading treatment, as well as violations of the Child Rights Law.
This incident adds to growing concerns over the persistent abuse of children across Nigeria. Advocacy groups continue to stress the need for stronger enforcement of child protection laws, improved reporting systems, and comprehensive support for victims.
