The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of 13 persons following a deadly attack by suspected bandits in Efeyi community, Ugboju, located in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, also saw the rustling of about 20 cattle, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Aondongu.
While initial reports from residents suggested that 15 people were killed, the police clarified that preliminary investigations confirmed 13 fatalities.
According to the statement, the attackers stormed the community with the primary aim of stealing cattle belonging to a local resident. During their escape, the armed assailants reportedly opened fire on farmers working in nearby bushes, leading to multiple casualties.

In swift response, the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, led a coordinated clearance operation alongside tactical teams to track down the perpetrators and restore order in the area.
The police disclosed that operatives encountered resistance during the operation but successfully repelled the attackers. Two suspected bandits were neutralized, while one AK-47 rifle and 15 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
Security agencies have continued combing nearby forests and surrounding communities in a sustained effort to apprehend fleeing suspects, recover the stolen livestock, and ensure justice is served.
The command condemned the attack and reassured residents of its commitment to restoring peace and strengthening security across the affected community and its environs.
