A wave of outrage has followed the tragic death of a 43-year-old commercial bus driver, Joseph Okpe, who reportedly died after being brutally assaulted by officers of the Nigerian Air Force in Lagos.
The incident, which occurred on May 9 along the busy Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, reportedly began as a minor traffic dispute.
According to eyewitness accounts and an affidavit submitted before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, the officers accused the driver of hitting their vehicle and demanded a compensation fee of ₦100,000.
When Okpe was unable to meet the demand, the situation allegedly escalated into violence.
The officers reportedly descended on him, repeatedly striking his head and face until he became critically injured.
Bystanders and fellow drivers eventually intervened, pleading for mercy and even offering to raise ₦50,000 to settle the dispute.
Despite these efforts, the damage had already been done.
Sources revealed that Okpe was rushed to multiple hospitals but was allegedly denied immediate treatment. He was eventually taken to a clinic in Mushin, where he was pronounced dead later that same day.
A medical report confirmed that he died from severe head injuries, with complications leading to pulmonary failure.
