Retired workers of Ebonyi State University have appealed to the Ebonyi State Government and the university management to pay their outstanding pensions and gratuities, saying many former staff members have died while waiting for their retirement benefits.
The retirees spoke in a video shared online by activist Chuks Eric, where several former workers described the hardship they have faced since leaving service without receiving the money they said they were entitled to.
One of the retirees, Okpoye Okoro, claimed that 209 former staff members had died based on records compiled by the group, while many others were still battling different health challenges.
“Many of us have died, up to 209 as of the time we recorded it. Some are still dying. Very many are still sick,” Okoro said.
He said the retirees had spent years working for the institution with the expectation that their retirement benefits would be paid after leaving service.

Another retiree, who said he joined the university on February 17, 1992, and retired on September 1, 2025, said he had not received his pension or gratuity.
He also disclosed that he became blind while still working at the university and depended on his wife for assistance in carrying out his duties.
According to him, his condition has left him without the financial means to cope with life after retirement.
Another retiree said former workers had repeatedly received explanations and promises concerning their outstanding benefits but had yet to receive the payments.
He said he had spent 23 years serving the institution and questioned why retirees who had devoted their productive years to the university should be left without their entitlements.
He also spoke about his deteriorating health, saying both of his legs had become swollen and that he could no longer move around freely as he once did.
“Pay us now that we are alive,” he appealed.
Another retiree said the situation had affected her entire family, explaining that her husband was seriously ill and that they could not afford the cost of his treatment.
She appealed to the state government and governor to intervene and address the retirees’ concerns.
One former worker also said he had spent 43 years in service before retiring without receiving his pension or gratuity.
“Good 43 years in service of a university. I went home with nothing,” he said.
He explained that even a modest monthly pension would provide retirees with regular income and help them meet their basic needs.
Another retiree said the lack of payment had made it difficult for him to afford food, medication and his children’s school fees.
The retirees are calling on the Ebonyi State Government and university authorities to settle their outstanding pensions and gratuities, saying they need the benefits while they are still alive and able to use them.
