The General Hospital Ezzamgbo in Ebonyi State has recorded its first successful Transurethral Resection of the Prostate, a keyhole procedure used to treat enlarged prostate.
The surgery was carried out on Monday by a team of urologists led by resident doctor Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Edeaja, with support from other medical staff at the facility.
The patient, Nwabueze Moses, had lived with severe prostate enlargement for years and relied on a suprapubic catheter after conservative treatment failed. Unlike open surgery, the TURP procedure required no external incision. Surgeons inserted a telescope through the urethra and removed the enlarged tissue under real-time visual guidance, reducing blood loss.

Dr. Edeaja said the technique is safer than open prostate surgery and cuts the risk of infections and complications. Recovery time is also shorter. “Patients undergoing the procedure can typically be discharged within three days, compared to about two weeks for conventional surgery,” he explained.
The hospital said the milestone was made possible by ongoing investments by the Ebonyi State Government in healthcare infrastructure and partnerships with specialist consultants.
Officials expressed optimism that more advanced surgical procedures would follow with sustained support and collaboration with tertiary institution.
