The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated two tankers designated for transporting edible vegetable oil after they were discovered carrying Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), popularly known as diesel, in Lagos State
The seizure followed an enforcement operation conducted by the agency, just three months after it warned tanker operators against using the same vehicles to transport both petroleum products and edible oil, citing serious health risks.
Speaking on the development, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Martins Iluyomade, said investigations showed that the tankers, approved solely for conveying edible vegetable oil, had been used to transport diesel in violation of food safety regulations.
According to him, the manager of the tankers claimed he was unaware of the agency’s colour-coding system for vehicles designated to transport edible oil.
Iluyomade disclosed that the two tankers, along with their drivers, have been taken into custody while investigations continue to determine the extent of the violation and appropriate regulatory measures.

He stressed that tankers assigned to transport edible vegetable oil must never be used for petroleum products because of the high risk of contamination, which could endanger consumers’ health.
The NAFDAC official added that dedicated edible oil tankers are required to comply with internationally accepted food safety standards and must be used exclusively for that purpose.
The agency reiterated its commitment to enforcing food safety regulations nationwide and warned transporters and operators to strictly comply with the established guidelines to protect public health.
