The Anambra State Government has arrested a 47-year-old woman, Onyinyechi Charles, for allegedly running an unlicensed maternity facility where illegal surgical procedures, including caesarean sections, were reportedly carried out.
The suspect was apprehended in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, during a joint inspection by officials of the State Ministry of Health and security operatives.
According to authorities, the facility—operated as a traditional birth attendant centre—was discovered to be conducting normal deliveries, caesarean sections, and other unauthorised medical procedures without proper licensing or professional oversight.
The operation followed directives from the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, as part of an ongoing clampdown on illegal medical practices and quackery across the state.
During the inspection, officials reportedly recovered various surgical instruments and medical equipment believed to have been used in the procedures. Hospital beds were also found within the premises, alongside what authorities described as a shrine and altar.

Reacting to the discovery, Obidike described the situation as a serious threat to public health, stressing that the government would not tolerate unqualified individuals putting lives at risk under the guise of healthcare delivery.
He urged residents, especially pregnant women, to seek medical attention only from licensed hospitals and certified healthcare professionals.
“The Ministry of Health will continue its surveillance and enforcement operations to identify and prosecute illegal practitioners,” he stated.
Authorities confirmed that the facility has been sealed and confiscated pending legal proceedings, while the suspect is expected to be charged in court.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Anambra East LGA, Ifeanyi Chinweze, commended the swift intervention of health officials and security agencies.
He encouraged residents to report suspicious medical facilities and avoid patronising unregistered centres.
The case is expected to proceed through the appropriate legal channels, where the allegations will be determined.
