
South Africa international midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, only weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The footballer’s death was announced on Saturday by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, McKenzie described Adams as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents, saying the nation was mourning alongside his family, teammates and supporters. He also urged the public and media to avoid speculation until officials release verified information.
According to reports, South African police have launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Adams recently featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping Bafana Bafana advance to the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history before their campaign ended with a defeat to co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32.
During the tournament, Adams drew widespread admiration after playing in South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic just hours after learning of the death of his grandmother.

The South African Football Players Union described his passing as an immeasurable loss to the country’s football community.
Adams made his senior international debut in 2022 and was a member of the South African squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
He began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the club, he won the South African league title and the CAF Champions League, establishing himself as one of the country’s most promising midfielders.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the football world as fans, teammates and officials remember his achievements and await the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
