Former England striker, Alan Shearer, has revised his earlier stance on England’s chances of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, now backing the Three Lions to go all the way.
Shearer made this known in his BBC column following England’s impressive performance against co-host nation Mexico in the Round of 16.
The victory appears to have reignited confidence not only among fans but also within the former Newcastle United forward himself.
Prior to the match, Shearer had expressed doubts about England’s ability to secure the trophy. However, their composed and resilient display at the Azteca Stadium has prompted a significant change in his outlook.

“There’s always hope with England at a major tournament, but that performance against Mexico has pushed us all further forward and given everyone, including me, confidence and belief,” Shearer wrote.
He further admitted that he did not truly believe England could win the tournament before witnessing their performance in the knockout stage.
“Before I went to the Azteca Stadium and saw how we handled everything thrown at us, I didn’t think England could win this World Cup. But I have changed my mind now—and I believe many others have too,” he added.
England will now face Norway in the quarter-final clash on Saturday, as they continue their pursuit of a second World Cup title.
