In a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, several top commanders of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), alongside 76 foot soldiers and their families, have surrendered to troops operating in the North-East.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Captain Muhammad Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, on Sunday.
According to the statement, the insurgents laid down their arms and abandoned their enclaves following sustained military offensives backed by credible intelligence.
Goni revealed that the group includes high-ranking members of the terrorist network who succumbed to mounting pressure from ongoing operations across the region.
“They are currently in a secure location undergoing profiling, debriefing, and other established procedures in line with operational protocols,” he stated.
The military further disclosed that within the past week alone, a total of 76 foot soldiers, accompanied by some of their family members, surrendered to troops in the theatre of operations.

The spokesperson emphasized that the wave of surrenders reflects the devastating impact of intensified military campaigns, which have significantly weakened terrorist strongholds and disrupted their command and logistics structures.
“Persistent operations have degraded the terrorists’ combat capabilities and eroded confidence within their ranks and leadership,” Goni added.
He also highlighted that the success demonstrates the effectiveness of Nigeria’s multi-dimensional counter-insurgency strategy, which combines precision strikes, intelligence-led operations, and collaboration with security partners.
Operation Hadin Kai reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on remaining insurgents until terrorism is completely eradicated from the region.
“The pressure will continue until all terrorist elements are neutralised or compelled to surrender,” the statement concluded.
