
A man in Edo State has been arrested alongside an alleged accomplice for reportedly staging his own kidnapping in a bid to extort ₦4 million from his family.
The suspects, identified as Lucky Alabi, 48, and Taiye Enahoro, 37, were arrested by operatives of the Igarra Police Division after intelligence-led investigations uncovered the alleged plot.
Police said the scheme was allegedly carried out on June 23, 2026, when Enahoro contacted Alabi’s relatives by phone, falsely claiming that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanding a ₦4 million ransom for his release.

Investigators later discovered the kidnapping was staged, leading to the arrest of both suspects on June 26. According to the police, the two men have confessed to their respective roles in the alleged crime and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, warned the public against engaging in criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from unsuspecting relatives.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring those involved in criminal activities are brought to justice and urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies promptly.
