
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested Ibobuminate Oweifa, the son of the traditional ruler of Okodi Community in Ogbia Local Government Area, over the alleged burning of a man accused of attempting to steal firewood.
The victim, identified as Godgift Biko, suffered severe burns during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.
Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Edebor, said officers responded promptly after receiving the report. He explained that the Divisional Police Officer rescued the victim, ensured he received emergency medical attention, and arrested the suspect.

According to the police commissioner, a preliminary investigation is underway, and the suspect will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
During questioning, Oweifa reportedly claimed he caught Biko attempting to steal his firewood and that an argument between them escalated into the incident.
The police, however, stated that the suspect’s account remains only one side of the story, stressing that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Authorities also condemned jungle justice and warned that acts of violence capable of endangering lives will not be tolerated. The suspect remains in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations.
