A powerful rainstorm over the weekend caused significant destruction across the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), leaving several hostels damaged and trees uprooted.
The storm, which swept through the university’s main campus, tore off sections of roofing from student hostels and exposed many accommodation areas to harsh weather conditions.
The worst-hit buildings include Awolowo and Isa Kaita hostels, where parts of the roofs were completely blown off, disrupting normal residential activities.
In addition to the structural damage, several trees were uprooted, while large branches fell across campus roads, temporarily hindering movement within the university.
Confirming the incident, the institution’s Public Relations Officer stated that although the damage was extensive, no casualties were recorded.
He assured that the university had swiftly mobilised its Works Services, Environmental Taskforce, Security Unit, Directorate of Housing, and Student Affairs Department to manage the situation.
