
Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested 17 individuals suspected of involvement in cult-related activities following coordinated raids across multiple locations in the state.
The operation, carried out by the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, targeted identified hideouts in Awka in the early hours of May 24, 2026. According to the police, the arrests were made based on credible intelligence.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects comprising young men aged between 17 and 30 were apprehended for alleged involvement in cultism and other activities considered harmful to public order and morality.
Items recovered during the raid include substances suspected to be cannabis, as well as other materials deemed relevant to ongoing investigations.

Preliminary findings indicate that some of the suspects may be affiliated with the Vikings Confraternity, also known as “Bagger,” a group linked to cult-related activities in parts of the country.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism, drug abuse, and other criminal acts.
He emphasized that such activities pose a threat to public peace and societal values.
Authorities confirmed that a full-scale investigation is currently underway to determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement in criminal activities. Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
