Police in Kano have arrested a 32-year-old man, Richard Peter, for allegedly defrauding Bayero University Kano students under the guise of offering fake ushering jobs and stealing 29 mobile phones.
According to a statement by Zone One Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Hussaini, the suspect was apprehended after a petition from students led by Clementina Paul. The students told police that Peter, who is from Lagos State, lured 38 female students to Mairabo Hotel in Sabon Gari on May 10, 2026, through an accomplice, Faith Dauda.
The victims said they were told to change into working attire and leave their phones and belongings behind, claiming phones were not allowed at the event venue. After being taken to the hotel restaurant and served food worth N6,000 each, the suspect disappeared without paying. When they returned to the room, they found their phones and other items missing.
