
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has been thrown into mourning following the death of a 100-level student of the institution, identified as Favour Olaniyi.
The tragic incident, which reportedly occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2026, came to light after the student’s lifeless body was discovered inside a bush near the university’s North Gate over the weekend.
Olaniyi, a student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was said to have gone missing before his remains were later found under circumstances suspected to be suicide-related.
Sources disclosed that an empty bottle containing a substance believed to be a lethal herbicide was recovered near the scene where the body was discovered.
The development sparked grief and confusion among students and residents around the institution, with many gathering near the area after news of the incident spread.

Confirming the incident, FUTA’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, expressed sadness over the loss and revealed that the deceased’s parents had been informed.
According to him, the university has begun cooperating with police authorities investigating the incident, while the Students Affairs Division has also intensified counselling support for students affected by the tragedy.
He added that the university remains committed to supporting students facing emotional or personal challenges and encouraged them to seek counselling whenever necessary.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, said preliminary findings showed no visible signs of violence on the deceased’s body.
Jimoh disclosed that the corpse had been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further examination, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
