The return of internally displaced persons to Maiduguri, Borno State, has officially begun, with Yobe State authorities coordinating the safe movement of families who have lived in camps for years.
The relocation is being led by the Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), alongside the Director of Search and Rescue at SEMA and security agencies. Priority is being placed on protecting women and children, who form the majority of those returning.
On Tuesday morning, IDPs from the Water Board facility and the Roundabout axis along Maiduguri Road departed Damaturu after expressing readiness to go home. The Yobe State Government provided free transport and full security escorts to ensure a safe journey.

So far, 1,295 people have been transported to Maiduguri. Most are women and children under 14, underscoring the vulnerability of the displaced population. Security personnel deployed along the route maintained order and helped build confidence among returnees.
Profiling of the remaining IDPs is ongoing. In Kasaisa village alone, 93 households comprising 547 individuals have been registered for return.
Some of those preparing to leave said they were excited to finally return to their ancestral homes in Borno State. The provision of free transport and security has eased the burden on families and brought relief as the state government pushes to reintegrate them safely.
