A contract diver died Tuesday during maintenance work at Egbin Power Plc’s pump house, the company said.
The incident occurred on April 28 at the plant’s lagoon-based pump house. Sources said the diver was conducting underwater repairs when a pump activated, trapping him in the impeller system. He died before rescue teams could reach him.
Egbin Power, Nigeria’s largest generation plant with 1,320 megawatts of capacity, suspended operations in the affected section after the accident. The shutdown led to the plant’s disconnection from the national grid. Generation data for Wednesday and Thursday showed output at zero megawatts.

In a statement, the company expressed condolences to the diver’s family and colleagues. “Egbin Power is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this incident,” the statement said. The company said an internal review is underway to determine how the machinery became active during maintenance.
The suspension of Egbin’s output has affected the national grid. There is no timeline yet for a return to full capacity. Investigations are ongoing.
