
The Niger State Government has arrested two foreign nationals at the Zuzungi mining site in Katcha Local Government Area over alleged illegal mining activities.
The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated enforcement operation led by the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Muhammad Qasim Danjuma, alongside the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, directors, and security operatives.
According to officials, the operation was part of a routine inspection and enforcement drive aimed at curbing unauthorized mining activities across the state and ensuring full compliance with mining regulations.
Following their arrest, the two foreign nationals were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with existing laws.

The Commissioner reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining, stressing that all mining operators must obtain the necessary licences and adhere strictly to approved environmental and operational standards.
He added that the government remains committed to protecting host communities, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring that mineral resources are properly managed for sustainable development.
Authorities also noted that the ongoing crackdown forms part of broader efforts under the state’s development agenda to promote accountability and attract legitimate investment into the mining sector.
