
A serving police inspector has died following a violent gun exchange with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force after he was arrested in connection with an armed robbery incident in Kontagora, Niger State.
The officer, identified as Inspector Jido Ahmed of the 61 Police Mobile Force (61 PMF), was allegedly involved in an armed robbery attack on a filling station located behind BCG Motor Park in Kontagora on April 15, 2026, at about 2:40 pm.
According to police reports, the suspects stormed the station, dispossessed an attendant of valuables, and shot a victim in the chest while attempting to escape.
Operatives of the “A” Division Kontagora were immediately alerted and trailed the suspects to the Dadin-Kowa area, where a fierce gun duel ensued.

During the exchange of fire, one of the suspects was shot in the leg, disarmed, and arrested. Shockingly, he was later identified as a serving police inspector.
The spokesperson for the command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, stating that the injured officer was first taken to the General Hospital in Kontagora before being transferred to the Police Clinic in Minna, where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of April 16.
He added that investigations are ongoing into the incident, while efforts are also underway to apprehend the second suspect who escaped during the shootout.
The case has since raised fresh concerns within security circles over internal discipline and criminal infiltration in the force.
