At least 57 members of Niger’s defence and security forces were reportedly killed in two separate attacks on September 23, 2026, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
The attacks reportedly occurred in Dabagu, Konni Department of Tahoua Region, and around Abala-Filingué in Tillabéri Region.
In Dabagu, 38 Nigerien soldiers were reportedly killed after Islamic State militants attacked a military position. Several others were said to be missing, while the bodies of some victims were reportedly evacuated to Tahoua, with others transported to Niamey by helicopter.

In the second attack around Abala-Filingué, 19 gendarmes were reportedly killed in an assault attributed to Islamic State militants.
The reported casualties from the two incidents bring the number of Nigerien defence and security personnel reportedly killed that day to 57.
The figures are based on reports attributed to security analyst Zagazola Makama and had not been independently verified in the report.
