A 54-year-old officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Prince Etteng Ise, has died in a lone vehicle crash along the Ikom-Calabar Highway in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Ise, who was attached to the Mfum Border in Etung Local Government Area, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole on the highway.
The accident occurred at about 2:56 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, around Alesi Village in Ikom Local Government Area.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that Ise was driving when he tried to manoeuvre around a pothole. His vehicle subsequently veered off the highway into a bush and crashed into a tree.
Residents who arrived at the scene reportedly rescued the victim and rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, for medical attention.

However, medical personnel at the hospital confirmed that he had died from injuries sustained in the crash. His remains were later deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The police command expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family, colleagues and the Nigeria Customs Service over the incident.
The command also urged motorists to exercise caution when using the highway, avoid excessive speed and remain vigilant, particularly around sections of the road affected by potholes.
