A 25-year-old suspected fighter of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has renounced terrorism and surrendered to Nigerian troops in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.
The former fighter, identified as Ali Gambo Kanuri, reportedly spent about eight months with the terrorist group before deciding to leave.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development on Saturday, August 15, 2026, Gambo is a native of Ngarinna village in Monguno LGA.
Military sources cited in the report said Gambo joined ISWAP about eight months ago after he was introduced to the group by a friend.
However, he reportedly became disillusioned with life within the terrorist organisation and eventually decided to abandon the group.
Gambo is said to have made his way out of the area controlled by the terrorists before arriving in Monguno town, where he voluntarily surrendered to troops.

Following his surrender, he was taken into custody and transferred to the appropriate authorities for further processing.
The authorities are expected awwto carry out necessary investigations and procedures in accordance with established measures for individuals who voluntarily disengage from terrorist groups.
His surrender comes amid continued military operations in Borno State aimed at disrupting terrorist activities and encouraging members willing to abandon the insurgency to lay down their arms.
