Spain have climbed to the top of the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings following their triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending Argentina’s reign as the world’s highest-ranked national team.
The newly crowned world champions secured the number one position after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in extra time. The victory earned Spain a significant points boost, taking them to 1,995.88 points.
Argentina, who entered the tournament as defending champions and the world’s top-ranked side, slipped to second place with 1,970.37 points after losing the final.
France retained third place in the rankings, while England remained fourth following their third-place finish at the World Cup. Brazil completed the top five despite suffering a surprise defeat to Norway during the tournament.

Morocco emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked nation, climbing to sixth in the world after reaching the quarter-finals. Egypt also improved their standing following an impressive run to the Round of 16, overtaking Nigeria in the continental rankings.
The Super Eagles remained 26th globally but dropped to fourth in Africa due to Egypt’s rise.
Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands occupy seventh, eighth and ninth positions respectively, while Mexico broke into the top 10 after an impressive World Cup campaign.
Germany slipped to 12th, with Italy falling to 15th after both nations failed to maintain their previous positions following the tournament.
Among the biggest movers were Norway, who climbed 12 places to 19th after a remarkable World Cup run that included a shock victory over Brazil.
The updated FIFA rankings will remain in effect until the next official release scheduled for October 7, 2026.
