
The Abia State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a criminal gang following a raid on an alleged cult gathering in Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) acted on credible intelligence indicating that about 50 suspected gang members had assembled in the area for cult-related activities.
The operation, carried out on July 6, led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Obioma Nmeribe, Emmanuel Lekwechi, and Ikemefula ThankGod Amadi, while other members of the group reportedly fled the scene.
Items recovered during the raid included a Beretta pistol loaded with eight rounds of ammunition, a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, one live round of ammunition, two black berets, a cutlass, and a digger.

In a separate operation conducted the same day, police officers working alongside the Joint Security Team, Operation Crush, arrested a 31-year-old suspect, Bright Nnabugu, from Umuobasi in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area.
Security operatives recovered a locally made single-barrel gun, one expended cartridge, and a cutter believed to have been used for cutting high-tension electrical wires.
The police said investigations into both incidents are ongoing, adding that all suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Danladi Isa, urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies to support efforts aimed at tackling crime across the state.
