FIFA has suspended Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo for five matches following a challenge that left Canada’s Ismael Kone with a serious leg injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Madibo was shown a red card during Qatar’s 6-0 defeat to Canada after a tackle that resulted in Kone suffering fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg.

After reviewing the incident, FIFA’s disciplinary committee ruled that the challenge amounted to serious foul play and imposed a five-match ban on the Qatari international. Madibo, however, has the option of appealing the decision.
Kone, 24, underwent surgery shortly after the match in Vancouver and is expected to begin a lengthy recovery process. Despite the incident, Madibo reportedly visited the Canadian midfielder in hospital to offer his support.
The suspension means Madibo will miss Qatar’s upcoming international matches, dealing another blow to the team following its early exit from the tournament.
