Four people have lost their lives while hundreds of families have been displaced following a devastating windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall in Kwara Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The disaster, which occurred on Saturday, also left several residents injured and caused extensive damage to homes and public facilities, including a primary school and a hospital.
Communities affected by the windstorm include Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari, Rungin Tsamiya, and other surrounding settlements, where many houses were either partially or completely destroyed.

In response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Sokoto Operations Office, carried out an assessment of the affected communities to determine the extent of the destruction and identify the immediate humanitarian needs of victims.
The agency said the assessment was aimed at supporting a swift emergency response and facilitating the distribution of relief materials to affected residents.
According to NEMA, four fatalities were recorded, while several other residents sustained varying degrees of injuries during the incident.
“NEMA will continue to work with relevant state and local authorities to ensure appropriate humanitarian assistance reaches the victims as efforts continue to determine the full impact of the disaster,” the agency said.
Authorities are expected to continue assessing the affected communities as plans are made to provide relief and support to displaced families and restore damaged public infrastructure.
