Talent manager Ubi Franklin has shared his thoughts on why many men are reluctant to go into court marriages, saying most of their fears are based on misunderstandings of the law.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Franklin explained that a common belief among men is that, in the event of a divorce, assets are automatically split equally between both partners.
He, however, stated that this assumption is not legally accurate in many cases.
According to him, the idea that court marriage always leads to a 50-50 division of property has discouraged some men from formalizing relationships legally.
He added that even in customary marriages, courts can award alimony depending on the circumstances and legal conditions met by either spouse.

Franklin also pointed out another concern often raised by men h the difficulty of retrieving gifts given to a partner after a breakup. He noted that, under normal circumstances, such gifts cannot be recovered unless they were given under specific legal conditions or agreements.
He advised that individuals should be more cautious when giving valuable gifts in relationships, suggesting that items can either be purchased in one’s own name or given with clear conditions attached to avoid future disputes.
“Many men are scared of court marriage because they wrongly believe property will automatically be shared 50-50 in the event of divorce, which is not always legally correct,” he explained in his post.
He further emphasized the importance of understanding marital laws properly to avoid misinformation and unnecessary fear surrounding legal marriage arrangements.
