Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has revealed that Alex Iwobi’s consistent appeal to top managers is rooted more in tactical discipline than just natural talent.
Speaking in an interview with Footy Africa, Sodje explained that Iwobi’s ability to strictly follow tactical instructions and fit seamlessly into different systems has made him a dependable choice for coaches throughout his career in England.
According to him, while Iwobi possesses undeniable skill, it is his structured style of play and commitment to team strategy that truly sets him apart.
“Iwobi has always been a player who plays to a structure. His discipline within a system is what has shaped him into the player he is today,” Sodje noted.
Sodje also highlighted the midfielder’s growth into a key figure for the Super Eagles, attributing his development to years of experience in the highly competitive English football scene.

Now at 30, Iwobi has evolved into one of Nigeria’s most reliable and experienced international players, earning respect for both his consistency and professionalism.
However, the Fulham midfielder is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained during a recent Premier League clash.
Marco Silva, Fulham’s manager, expressed optimism that Iwobi could return before the season ends, although he will miss upcoming fixtures, including a game against Aston Villa.
This season, Iwobi has made 27 league appearances, contributing four goals and three assists further underlining his importance at both club and national levels.
His fitness remains a concern for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
