
At least five people have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected gunmen in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, further deepening concerns over renewed violence in the region.
The attack occurred on Sunday night in Fan District, where residents said armed assailants ambushed civilians who were returning home around 9pm.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen opened fire on the victims without warning, causing panic in the community.
A resident, Pam Saidu, confirmed the incident, stating that four victims died on the spot, while another person later died after being taken to a nearby hospital due to severe injuries sustained during the attack.

Community leaders have strongly condemned the killings. The Berom Youth Moulders JiAssociation described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, calling on security agencies to urgently strengthen surveillance and protection in vulnerable areas of the local government.
The group also warned that repeated attacks in parts of Barkin Ladi were worsening fear among residents and report disrupting normal community life.
Following the incident, residents have appealed for increased security patrols, especially at night, to prevent further attacks.
As of the time of this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident, and efforts to reach its spokesperson were unsuccessful.
