
Thirteen individuals abducted along a major highway have regained their freedom following a coordinated rescue operation by security operatives in Kogi State.
The victims were rescued by the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Federal Capital Territory Command, during a joint operation in the Egume area of Anyigba.
According to official reports, the victims were kidnapped on April 26, 2026, while travelling from Calabar, Cross River State, to Abuja for a scheduled programme.
They remained in captivity for nearly two weeks before their rescue in the early hours of Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The operation, which took place around 4:00 a.m., was led by Suleiman Abiodun, popularly known as “Evil Spirit,” alongside operatives from the Kogi State Command of the Vigilante Group and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
Authorities confirmed that all 13 victims were rescued safely. Those identified include Pastor Victor Edet Okon, Mercy Victor Okon, Bassey Bassey Ekpenyong, Sarah Bassey Ekpenyong, Evangelist Perfect Bomba, Christian George, Mary God’s Will Asuquo, Mary Bassey Kanu, Rita Effiom, Maria Undie, Mary Joseph, Iboro Johnson, and Prosper Ebuara.
However, officials did not disclose whether any suspects were apprehended during the operation or if ransom payments were made prior to the victims’ release.
The incident highlights the persistent threat of kidnapping along major routes in Kogi State and across Nigeria, as security agencies and local vigilante groups continue to intensify efforts to combat the growing menace.
