Students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Tuesday staged a protest over a prolonged power outage affecting their hostels, calling on authorities to urgently address the situation.
According to reports, the students have been without electricity for over a week, a development they say has severely disrupted their academic activities and daily living conditions.
Speaking during the protest, a student, Felix Bala, expressed frustration over the persistent blackout.
He noted that since resumption, students have struggled without power, despite assurances that the issue would be resolved.
“We have not had electricity in our hostels since we resumed. We were told power was cut off, but nothing has been done. We demand immediate restoration,” he said.

The protesters also highlighted the ripple effects of the outage, including the lack of water supply, which depends on electrically powered pumping systems. This, they said, has led to poor sanitation, with toilets and other facilities left unclean for days.
Students revealed that complaints had been lodged with the university management repeatedly, but no concrete action had been taken. As a result, they vowed to sustain the protest until their demands are met.
Efforts to reach key university officials, including the Students’ Union Government President, Senator Younglan Talyoung, and the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Chris Piwuna, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, some off-campus students reportedly appealed to the protesters to ease tensions and allow management to intervene, but the demonstrators remained resolute.
The situation continues to generate concern, with students insisting that access to basic amenities is essential for their well-being and academic success.
