
Two serving police officers and a dismissed police sergeant have been arrested in Abuja over alleged extortion after 15 drivers’ licences belonging to members of the public were reportedly recovered from them.
The suspects were arrested on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after a distress call was made over alleged extortion by police officers at Transcorp Junction in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory.
Following the report, officers from the Maitama Division were sent to the area to investigate the complaint.
The suspects were identified as ASP Michael Godwin, attached to Force Transport, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Inspector Demeka’a Yarkwan, attached to Wuse Division; and Sergeant William Udokang, a dismissed police officer.
According to the police situation report, 15 drivers’ licences belonging to different individuals were recovered from the suspects.
Investigators subsequently contacted some of the owners’ relatives as they worked to establish how the licences came into the possession of the suspects.

Preliminary findings reportedly indicated that some motorists had their licences seized and were allegedly forced to make payments ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦183,000.
The police said efforts were ongoing to locate all the owners of the recovered licences and obtain further information that could assist the investigation.
The three suspects remain under investigation, while the allegations against them have not been proven in court.
