The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Precious Yohanna, over the alleged killing of her newborn baby in Abuja.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to Adeh, the command received a distress call on October 4 concerning the discovery of an abandoned baby in a bush around the Jabi area of the FCT.
Police operatives from the Jabi Division were immediately deployed to the location, where they found the lifeless body of a male infant with deep wounds on the throat and abdomen.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Following the discovery, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, ordered a manhunt to identify and arrest the person responsible.
Adeh said community members assisted the police in tracing and arresting Yohanna, a native of Riyam in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State, who resides in the Daki-Biu/Jabi area of the FCT.
Preliminary investigations reportedly showed that Yohanna was the mother of the deceased infant and had given birth inside her room on October 3.
The police alleged that she subsequently used a razor blade to inflict the fatal injuries on the newborn.
According to Adeh, the suspect confessed to the act, claiming that she committed it out of hatred for the baby’s father.
