Heavy flooding has left scores of travellers stranded after floodwaters submerged a section of the Benin-Ore Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, disrupting movement and raising fresh concerns over road safety.
A viral video circulating on social media showed motorists and passengers gathered along the affected stretch as rising floodwaters made the road impassable. The footage captured stranded commuters expressing shock while observing the flooded highway.
Eyewitnesses at the scene could be heard reacting with disbelief as the water covered the road, forcing vehicles to stop and preventing motorists from continuing their journeys.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the condition and safety of the Benin-Ore corridor, which serves as a major link between the South-West and South-South regions of the country.

In recent months, the highway has also witnessed several security incidents, including attacks by suspected kidnappers on travellers. One such attack involved a commercial bus travelling along the route, resulting in the death of the driver and the abduction of some passengers.
The latest flooding has further compounded the challenges faced by road users, with many calling for urgent intervention to improve drainage infrastructure and ensure the highway remains safe and accessible, especially during the rainy season.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the flooding or announce measures to restore normal traffic flow along the affected section of the expressway.
