
President Bola Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid to host the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards as well as the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly.
The approval was confirmed in a statement issued by the Nigeria Football Federation following a meeting between President Tinubu and the CAF leadership during the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.
The CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, was part of the high-level engagement where Nigeria’s hosting rights were discussed and endorsed.
According to the statement, the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly is scheduled for October 2026 and will bring together hpresidents of CAF’s 54 member associations, zonal union representatives, and top football administrators across Africa.

The CAF Awards ceremony, one of African football’s most prestigious events, is also expected to take place later in the year, celebrating the continent’s best players, coaches, and national teams.
Nigeria’s delegation at the meeting included Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, former NFF President Amaju Pinnick who now serves as Special Adviser to the CAF President and CAF Acting General Secretary Samson Adamu.
Nigeria has hosted the CAF Awards on several occasions, with Lagos last staging the event in 2015, an edition remembered for Yaya Touré’s historic fourth consecutive African Player of the Year win and Asisat Oshoala’s breakthrough victory in the women’s category.
With this latest approval, Nigeria is set to once again welcome the continent’s football elite in what is expected to be a major showcase of African football excellence.
