A three-storey building under construction has collapsed in Aba, Abia State, sparking panic among residents and renewed calls for stronger government action to curb the rising incidents of building collapse across the state.
The building, which was being developed for commercial purposes, reportedly collapsed on Wednesday morning before workers arrived at the construction site for the day.
The structure was said to have caved in as construction work approached the roofing stage.
Some residents who gathered at the scene attributed the collapse to alleged use of substandard building materials and poor construction practices. However, there has been no official confirmation from the relevant authorities to substantiate these claims.
Residents have urged the Abia State Government to intensify monitoring of construction sites and take decisive measures to prevent further building collapses in the state.
Following the incident, officials of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) sealed the affected building to facilitate investigations and determine the cause of the collapse.

The latest incident adds to a growing number of building-related structural failures recorded across Aba, Umuahia, Osisioma and Ikwuano areas of Abia State between June and August 2026.
Previous incidents include the collapse of two-storey and three-storey buildings at Finbars Road and Low Cost Housing Estate in Umuahia on July 17.
A two-storey building under construction also collapsed at Umugbalu in Ikwuano Local Government Area in early July, while a three-storey building collapsed at Umuozue, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, on July 13.
On July 9, GADA evacuated residents of a four-storey building at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after the structure developed serious cracks.
Despite the series of incidents, no deaths were reported in the collapsed and distressed buildings mentioned.
Authorities are expected to investigate the latest collapse and establish whether construction standards, materials or other structural factors contributed to the incident.
