A tanker driver has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a dispatch rider in the Maryland area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the incident occurred along Kodesho Road, where a fully loaded tanker carrying containers of groundnut oil reportedly struck and fatally crushed the motorcyclist.
According to LASTMA, the driver attempted to escape without rendering assistance or reporting the incident. However, officers swiftly responded to a distress call, pursued the vehicle, intercepted it, and arrested the suspect.
The driver and the tanker have since been handed over to the State Traffic Department (Area F Police Command, Ikeja) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
LASTMA officials also secured the crash scene, managed traffic, and coordinated emergency response efforts to minimise disruption, while fellow dispatch riders informed the deceased’s family of the tragic incident.

Reacting to the development, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as a heartbreaking but avoidable tragedy. He warned that reckless driving, excessive speeding, and fleeing accident scenes are serious offences that endanger lives and attract legal consequences.
Bakare-Oki urged drivers of tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles to comply strictly with traffic regulations and exercise greater caution on the roads. He also reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to working with the police and other emergency agencies to improve road safety and ensure prompt responses to traffic incidents across Lagos State.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, LASTMA said three people sustained severe fractures after a multi-vehicle collision along LASU–Isheri Road in Lagos.
Preliminary findings indicated that a MACK flatbed truck suffered brake failure before crashing into a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles. The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
