Panic broke out at Unity Fountain in Abuja on Thursday after human rights activist Omoyele Sowore collapsed during a confrontation with police at a Democracy Day protest.
Sowore slumped after security operatives moved to disperse demonstrators who had gathered to protest insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance. The crowd had assembled at the venue before officers deployed tear gas canisters to break up the gathering.
The use of tear gas created chaos at the scene, with protesters scrambling for safety. Sources at the protest said Sowore was affected by the gas and collapsed amid the confusion.
