A security operative in Imo State has come under scrutiny after a viral video surfaced online showing him allegedly demanding a ₦10,000 bribe from a motorist at a checkpoint.
In the footage, the unidentified operative—dressed in black and partially masked—was seen seated inside a vehicle after reportedly confiscating a young man’s mobile phone. Unaware that the device was still recording, the officer allegedly instructed the victim to obtain money from his driver.
“Go and collect ₦10,000 from your driver. Tell the driver to borrow you ₦10,000,” the operative was heard saying in the video.
The incident is believed to have occurred after the victim was stopped at a checkpoint by the operative and his colleagues.
The recording clearly captured both the officer’s face and the conversation, raising concerns over extortion practices among security personnel.

The video has since circulated widely on social media, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for accountability within Nigeria’s security system.

Stakeholders recently emphasized that insecurity cannot be effectively addressed through force alone, urging authorities to uphold human rights and end practices such as extortion, arbitrary arrests, and unlawful detention.
As of the time of this report, authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the identity of the operative involved.
